Hurricane Idalia made landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida’s Gulf Coast as a Category 3 storm, the National Hurricane Center said on Wednesday morning.

Idalia is bringing a life-threatening storm surge as high as 16 feet (4.9 meters) and severe winds along the Florida Gulf Coast. Storm watches and warnings are also in effect along Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina’s coastline, with power outages being reported across a wide area.

More than 90% of household accounts were without power in a cluster of counties along Florida’s Gulf Coast and east of the state capital of Tallahassee, according to a Florida Public Service Commission update at 3 p.m. US East Coast time on Wednesday. Data tracked by poweroutage.us showed more than 280,000 Florida customers and more than 170,000 Georgia customers affected by outages as of 3:25 p.m.
