ORIGIN 
Afeni Shakur was an American civil rights activist and businesswoman. She was the mother of the late west coast rapper Tupac Shakur. Afeni was born Alice Faye Williams on January 10, 1947 in Lumberton, North Carolina. He father, Walter, was a trucker and her mother, Rosa Belle, was a homemaker. She had a sister named Gloria Jean. Shakur and her family moved to New York City in 1958. There she attended the Bronx High School of Science.
CAREER
Shakur was a member of the Black Panther Party from 1964 to 1969. She wrote several articles for the party’s newsletter, and was able to trick FBI agents into believing that the Panther Party was fading. She was arrested and charged in 1969 on multiple counts of conspiracy to bomb police stations along with other public places. Shakur acted as her own criminal defense attorney in what was called the Panther 21 trial in 1971. She won her freedom in May 1971.
Shakur relocated to Baltimore, Maryland in 1984. She got caught up in a life of drugs and was unable to keep a job. She moved to Marin County, California in 1988 but would return to New York City in 1991. She was able too overcome her drug addiction with the help of Narcotics Anonymous meetings. Shakur became caretaker of Tupac’s legacy after he was shot and killed in 1996. This included Tupac’s estate, and his extensive library of unreleased music. Shakur founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation in 1997. The foundation provides art related programs for young people. She was also known for the Makaveli Branded clothing line which was established in 2003.

Afeni Shakur died on May 2, 2016 at the age of 69. Her official cause of death was heart attack. She was rushed to a local hospital after police responded to a possible cardiac arrest report. She died shortly after. Shakur was married to ‘Lumumba’ from 1968-1971, followed by his brother ‘Mutulu’ from 1975-1982. She married Dr. Gust Davis in 2004. Afeni Shakur had a net worth of $50 million. She is survived by daughter, Sekyiwa.
