Mortal Kombat 1 is the latest installment in the iconic fighting game franchise developed by NetherRealm Studios. The game promises to introduce a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang, featuring reimagined versions of classic characters, a new fighting system, game modes, and fatalities. The game is scheduled to release on September 19, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store).
One of the most anticipated features of Mortal Kombat 1 is the support for crossplay and cross-progression. Crossplay allows players to play online with or against other players on different platforms, while cross-progression enables players to carry over their progress and unlocks across platforms. These features would enhance the online experience and player base of Mortal Kombat 1, as well as offer more convenience and flexibility for players who own multiple devices.
Is Mortal Kombat 1 Crossplay/ Crossplatform?
It seems that Mortal Kombat 1 will not launch with crossplay and cross-progression features on day one. According to a screenshot of a FAQ page provided by Warner Bros, the publisher of Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm Studios plans to “add cross-play or cross-progression support post-launch.”
The FAQ page has since been edited and removed, so the validity of this information is uncertain. It is possible that NetherRealm Studios is still working on implementing these features or that they are waiting for more feedback from the beta test in August.
It is also unclear whether crossplay and cross-progression will be available across all platforms or only between certain ones.
For example, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, the previous title in the series, supports crossplay between PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Stadia, but not between PC and Switch. It also does not support cross-progression at all. So it remains to be seen if Mortal Kombat 1 will improve on this aspect.
We will update this article as more information becomes available.
