He was accused of killing a man named Willliam P. Gilbert, in 1893, in Harlan Co KY. William Lankford changed his name to William Little/Lyttle and fled to Virginia.

The 1900 census enumerates William (born February 1867 in Virginia), Mary J. (born April 1878 in Pennsylvania), Mary E. (born May 1896), William B. (born October 1897) and Howard R. (born July 1899). The children were born in West Virginia.
The 1910 census records Wm. Little (age 42, born Kentucky), M. J. (age 32, born Pennsylvania), M. E. (age 14), W. B. (age 12), H. R. (age 10), P. J. (daughter, age 9), I. M. (daughter, age 5) and Cecil (age 2). M. E. was born in Pennsylvania and the other children in West Virginia. He was a lumberman in the woods. They had been married for 15 years, and each of their 6 children was living.
The 1920 census records William M. Little (age 51, born Kentucky), Mary J. (age 41, born Pennsylvania), Bruce (age 20), Howard R. (age 18), Icy M. (age 14), Cecil (age 11), Nannie B. (age 7) and Woodrow M. (age 1 year, 4 months). The children were born in West Virginia. He was a laborer for a lumber mill; Bruce and Howard were carpenters.
The 1930 census lists William (age 58, born Kentucky, married at age 27), Mary J. (age 52, born Pennsylvania, married at age 17), Cecil A. (age 21, Nannie B. (age 17) and Woodrow (age 11). The children were born in West Virginia. He was a laborer for a lumber mill and Cecil was a common laborer.
